HOW DOES DEVELOPMENTAL
PSYCHOTHERAPY WORK?
The focus of the time together is to create safety, support and understanding for children as they learn, or re-learn, how to trust the adults in their world. Part of that work is to understand specific behaviors that children are presenting. Behaviour is another language, one which children use to tell us how they are feeling. As parents understand their child’s “language” they build trust. As a child trusts and gains confidence he becomes playful and spontaneous and is able to create a life story that is helpful and supportive of who they are.
Considerable support is given to the caregiver in learning methods of parenting that are attuned to the child’s attachment issues. This approach focuses on the relationship between caregiver and child in the context of the child’s attachment and trauma history.
The therapist will work with caregivers to promote a connection with their children that understands the child’s experience. The connection between the caregiver/parent and child is the place where change and healing occurs.

Dawn has 15 years professional experience working the field of child welfare and is a trained Theraplay® therapist. She has also trained with Dr. Becker Weidman, a leading North American attachment specialist and trainer.
Both Dianne and Dawn provide attachment based services backed by expert clinical consultation.
